What we're set up to do

Our governing document sets out our purpose plainly: to play a part in society by relieving human suffering, irrespective of colour, creed or class. In practice, that means:

• Relieving hardship and distress among homeless people, and among those in need who are living in adverse housing conditions.
• Making money available to housing associations and other charitable bodies whose aims align with ours, so their work isn't held up for lack of funds.

We're deliberately narrow in scope. A small, focused charity can move quickly and keep overheads low — and we think that matters more than trying to be all things to all people.

Governance

GFY Shelters is led by a board of trustees who volunteer their time and receive no pay, fees or benefits from the charity. Day-to-day work is carried out by a team of volunteers.

Trustees & volunteers

Our trustees are responsible in law for the charity's management and administration, and for making sure it does what it was set up to do. Current trustee appointments, and any other trusteeships they hold, are published on the public Charity Commission register — we keep that page current rather than duplicating it here, so you always see the up-to-date list.

Behind the trustees, our volunteers do the practical work: assessing requests for help, coordinating with local housing associations, and keeping the charity running day to day.

Accountability

We report annually to the Charity Commission for England and Wales, which regulates charities in England and Wales and holds our filed accounts, trustee list and governing document on public record.
